Antitheft Vs Insurance on Devices

A lot of consumers are sold insurance with their handsets or devices at time of purchase. This is a good protection against getting the phone repaired or replaced if it is damaged or it fails to operate for what ever reason.

But in reality, it is easy to just laugh it off with the phrase " My phone is insured if it is lost, why do I need Antitheft?"

Sit back and think for a moment about that comment, imagine (which may be easier for someone who has already lost their device before), how would you feel if you suddenly realise that you have lost your Mobile, Blackberry, i-POD, External Hard Drive.

All that information, contacts, music, personnal data you no longer have? Do you feel at ease knowing, insurance will cover it, I will get a new one. But the new one will have no contacts in it, your favourite music list, your final essay paper on your hard drive is now gone?

Also, WILL INSURANCE ACTUALLY COVER IT: or will you be stuck with a mobile plan but no mobile. If you only had Antitheft.net.au installed, at least you have a chance of catching the dirty thief that stole not only your device, but your personal life.

Below is some exclusions of insurance coverage that a lot of people are not aware of. Read them if you have 2 minutes, you will actually realise that the beloved device may not be covered at all unless it was stolen from on your persons, as well as not covering anyone at a school with a device.

EXCLUSIONS: include but not limited to;

  1. Any loss, theft or damage caused by or arising from:

    (i)
    any intentional act or omission by You or anyone acting on Your behalf;
    (ii)
    leaving Your Equipment Unsecured in any property, place or premises;
    (iii)
    leaving Your Equipment Unsecured in any aircraft or water borne vessel;
    (iv)
    leaving Your Equipment Unsecured, whether out of Your sight or not, in any public place or a place to which persons not authorised to use the Equipment have regular access;
    (v)
    leaving Your Equipment visible in any motor vehicle;
    (vi)
    leaving Your Equipment in any unlocked or Unsecured motor vehicle;
    (vii)
    any process of cleaning, servicing, maintenance, adjustment, installation or repair;
    (viii) any loss where the Equipment has been left behind in an unknown location or You have forgotten its whereabouts;
    (ix)
    a wilful act or negligence, abuse or misuse by You, Your employees or any person using the Equipment with Your permission;
    (x)
    war, invasion, acts of foreign enemy, hostilities or warlike operations (whether war is declared or not) civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, military or seized power;
    (xi)
    the use, existence or escape of nuclear or radioactive material, or any activity associated with them;
    (xii)
    wear and tear, gradual deterioration or developing flaws, rust, oxidation, corrosion, dampness of atmosphere or other variations in temperature, inherent vice and latent defect;
    (xiii)
    the failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions;
    (xiv)
    incorrect connections of signal leads or application of incorrect electrical supply, power surge or fluctuation; or
    (xv)
    lawful seizure, including repossession or other operation of law;
    (xvi)
    a virus. For the purpose of this Exclusion, a virus includes Trojan horses, worms, logic bombs or any other program or software which prevents any Equipment operating system software or content download working properly in any way;
    (xvii)
    the Equipment being located in the possession of a child in a primary or secondary school.

  2. Any loss, theft, damage or malfunction where no actual known or identifiable event can be attributed to causing the loss, theft, damage or malfunction.

    As you can see from above, insurance is not always the best scenario.

    To help combat mobile phone theft, Australia now has inter-carrier International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) blocking. IMEI allows stolen phones to be blocked from use on GSM mobile phone networks.

    Our software will send you your IMEI number as part of the program, so you know that
    A/ it is actually stolen and not just lost,
    B/ you receive your IMEI number so you can contact the relevant network for blocking straight away.
